Used, new from the dealer, or a new copy?
Three ways to replace a part. For a lot of parts, the used original is the sensible one.
- Used original
- Taken off a scrapped car of the same model. It is the part the factory made for your car, with some years on it.
- New from the dealer
- The same original part, new, from the brand’s dealer. The best you can get, and usually the most expensive.
- New copy
- Made new by another factory to look like the original. Some are good, some never fit right.

Where used makes sense
- Body panels: doors, bonnets, bumpers, wings, boot lids
- Mirrors and lights
- Glass
- Gearboxes and engines
- Interior parts: seats, dashboards, trim
- Wheels
Where to buy new
- Brake pads and discs
- Filters
- Belts
- Wiper blades
These wear out by design. A used one has already done part of its life.

Before you pay, check the part
- 1Ask the shop for a photo of the actual part, not one like it.
- 2Compare it with your old part, or match the part number if it has one.
- 3Body panels: look in daylight for filler, rust and bent edges.
- 4Lights and mirrors: check that the clips and mounts are not broken.
- 5Engines and gearboxes: ask which car it came from and what guarantee the shop gives.
- 6Agree the price, delivery and any return on WhatsApp, so you both have it in writing.
